So, I've recently been thinking about learning to twirl a flaming sword. I've worked with swords for years. I've trained in fencing as well as long-sword for theatrical (ren faire) stuff. So, I was curious to know how you go from being a swordperson to a flaming swordperson? Will my standard live-steel sword work, or will I need a new sword, and if so, what kind? I was told you don't actually use a naked sword but a sword wrapped in kevlar to hold the flamable fluid, and so you need a cheap sword, something definately not full tang.

Very interested to hear feedback on this.

So, I've been reading a lot about fire sword making, and I've looked at several designs being sold online. I settled on the idea of a wood sword as a base, covered in aluminum tape, and wrapped with wick. Seems like the easiest and lightest approach.

I bought a wood bokken and some hemlock dowel, planning to use the dowel for something else. When the dowel project didn't work out, I decided to wrap IT in aluminum tape and wick instead, since its regular shape would make that process much easier. The end result is a fire sword with a dowel as a base instead of a sword. I don't plan on striking anything with it.

What I'd like to know is if anything has experience with a fire sword like this. Did it last? Did it fail? Should I be worried about the strength of the dowel diminishing over time? I'd love to hear some feedback from some more experienced fire sword people.

There's a photo of the sword in my gallery, toward the end of the first or second burn. For my purposes I think it looks great. I'm more concerned with safety and longevity.

Thanks!

I've added a lot more wick than I had before, and the center of balnce used to be right around the start of the wick, which was good, because it made for nice spinning (even though it's a wrist-breaker)... Now the CG is about there dry, and wet it's going to be wonkey. Where do you guys have the cg on your swords?

For counterweight, I was thinking about just putting some lead weights in the base of the pommel.

Message
FireDrums IV
Thursday, September 28th - Sunday, October 1st, 2006

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 1st gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. We have conveyed to Cutters how wonderful and respectful everyone has been at our past 3 gatherings and that FireDrums is not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to www.firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than past FireDrums gatherings.

Laie, Hawaii--Twenty warriors from around the globe gathered at the Polynesian Cultural Center, on the North Shore of O'ahu Thursday evening, in what was a momentous start to the 14th Annual World Fire Knife competition. There were some truly inspiring performances witnessed... And more than a few instances where warriors' performances simply fell apart. (oi!)

From the first night's results, it's obvious that World Champion, 16 year old Mikaele Oloa, is still 'dominating the dojo' with several new and *SICK!* combinations that have not been seen before in the WFK championships.

A variety of new and highly daring moves were seen from several of the competitors last night, raising the bar on the sport's already spectacular level of skill.

Several other participants also put forth respectable performances last night--notably Yuji-Alex, Japan's first competitor, in what has been known to be a Polynesian-dominated event. Yuji, who's stage name includes "Alex," took the western name in honor of former WFK Champion Alex Galeai, whom has been his principal inspiration. Unfortunately, Yuji's fireknives were confiscated while checking in for his flight from Japan. Upon arrival he notified the WFK authorities, and they arranged for Yuji to get a set of replacement fireknives to perform with--from none other than Alex Galeai! himself Although Yuji did not make the semi-finals, he did put forth a lot of heart and a very well executed routine that really connected with the crowd.

The competition continues tonight with the nine Senior Semi-Finalists, as well as the Junior and Intermediate classes.

Check out the action tonight, if you can!
Last year, there was a "Fire Sword" class around thursday or so, and a bunch of novices who had never swung a fire sword showed up. I showed up, hoping to learn from other people's technique, but ended up (with Fenris), having to "teach" the class (in a half-assed way, I might add!)
Anyone interested in Meeting up to show each other fire sword technique? How about Wednesday AM? Location TBA!

Apparently the flames are (mostly) real and not CGI. Which is a bonus for those of us who take this stuff semi-seriously.

Mostly filipino styling on the weapon use - not too bad for an actor at least. He apparently did his own fire stunts.

Are there any other examples in the movies of flaming sword? Or even any other interesting flaming toys?

Design notes:
The wicks are 2" kevlar folded over to 1", allowing for a longer burning time and the ability to partially unfold them to account for the curvature of the swords. The wicks are wired on with 20 gauge bailing wire through small holes drilled through the blade. The small gauge copper pipe on the hook side of the blades is meant to provide a smooth edge for sliding the swords into a hooking position. There are sewn duveytene flags on the ends attached through grommets and large key rings to the blunted hilt blade.

Flaws: while these are slightly heavier steel (?) than the regular spring steel blades available in most martial arts supply stores, the blades still bend during use, especially between the handle and the start of the kevlar wicking. I'm wondering about metal fatigue and failure during a performance. Also, these swords are definitely NOT to be used for combat. Actually, I've yet to find a pair of combat steel hook swords anywhere...

Aloha ~ Kenrom here ; )

Fire swords. I just posted some notes about a design my friend Magnus and I came up with last year to Santa Rosa Fire Tribe... I'll repost here ; )

The double-swords that Singe mentioned have a really neat slide 'trap' that allows the two swords to come apart sideways at the hilt. This was professionally welded by my friend Magnus, and extremely sturdy! I helped build this particular fire tool and consulted on its design, but the welding was all Magnus'. You would need to have welding skills to create something like these swords, though the design itself is fairly simple and may be achieved through other techniques and materials.

Here are my thoughts on mine and Magnus' prototype design, which you may find helpful when building your own swords...

When we created the double-swords, our goal was to build it tough enough to endure the shock of actual (staged) fire combat, and to devise a mechanism to quickly and easily separate the two swords.

We used 1" steel bars, 1/8" thick for the blades and welded 1/8" round metal guards onto them to help protect hands from the huge flame that fire swords put out. There is a single slit in each of the guards for the other blade to slide in and out of, and the slits are offset by about a half inch each from center at the hilt.

The slide trap is basically made up of the two guards held in place by rectangular metal pieces welded onto either side of the guards at the hilt: one on top, and the other on the bottom. (See photos in this tribe's photo gallery.) This works really well and is superior to any other means of securing double-swords together because it is impossible to separate them accidentally.

Another important aspect of fire sword design is how the kevlar is secured to the blades. Kevlar tends to bunch up and "blossom" around securing points, which doesn't look good. What's more, wicks cannot take a lot of blade contact before fraying and falling apart. These two things have been a major problem with the fire sword designs that I've seen.

So to solve this we folded over 2" kevlar webbing (so that it's 1" wide) and secured it to the sides of each blade using bolts and a long strip of sheet metal (see photo gallery). The kevlar itself is held in the center of the blade and lays flush up to both edges--not wrapped around! This presents a hard metal edge to absorb blocks and parries and helps prevent the kevlar from getting torn up during blade-on-blade contact. BTW, this configuration also makes a much more satisfying sound in combat!

One thing about my swords is that they are presently weighted towards the blades--not good. Balance is very important for any sword, since a perfectly weighted sword is almost effortless to wield, while one that is unbalanced causes a lot of strain on your wrist! When we welded the pommels (counterweights) onto the ends of each sword, we failed to take into account the weight that would be added to the blades later by the kevlar, metal strips that secure it, the nuts and bolts, or the fuel.

Oh well... The slight imbalance isn't so great, but otherwise a good fire tool.

Lately I've started toying with lighter fire tool design ideas--wooden martial arts swords sheathed in aluminum tape and/or sheet metal. I've yet to actually finish a prototype since returning from Burning Man, but now that things are settling down I'm going to have a go at it. I'll let you guys know how that goes...

Hope my notes on the subject help you guys come up with some trick fire sword designs yourselves...

Flame ON!
The Fire Arts Festival's coming up soon... I imagine there will be fire folks visiting from out of town (I KNOW there's going to be an LA contingent) and was thinking it would be cool to organize a gathering somewhere so we can hang out and spin.

1) Any suggestions for a good, discrete location? Lake Merritt might attract a bit too much attention. Maybe somewhere across the bay? Maybe someone has access to a nice private spot? I was thinking the Alameda spot, but maybe that's a bit too out-of-the-way?

2) What do y'all think would be a good time? Thursday night when the fancy-schmancy show's going on? Maybe some other night? Maybe a daytime gathering without fire?
If you think you'd come to something like this, please post a reply so I can guage interest!
Leave it to Orbit to come up with the fabulous networking ideas …Sounds great - I would love hangout with the LA and FAF people outside of the festival.
My friend just opened up a small warehouse space around the corner from SubLounge.. maybe she would be willing to hosting a gathering? It ’s a little too small for inside burning, maybe smaller toys? But Ro, Andy and I performed there last weekend outside the building on the sidewalk. They opened the roll-up door and the party guests looked down on us from the inside –it worked pretty well. A cop drove by while we were performing and shouted in his megaphone “just don ’t burn the place down ”and kept going. hee hee. It might be an option if were looking to do more talking/learning/spinning without fire, less but maybe some burning.

If we want to do a lot of burning and can ’t find outside private property, then I suggest the AIDS Memorial Grove/Glen in the park. It ’s pretty secure/private.. if you include the grassy area.. it can hold a lot of people.

As far as timing.. hmm …maybe Sunday night after the closing ritual …throw a celebration party - if one ’s not already happening? Who am I kidding, there's got to be a party planned already?! I like the idea of meeting during the day, but I ’m also thinking of taking some of the daytime workshops @ the FAF and don ’t want to miss out on anything.

Blessings, jaden rose

That's right - there is a new Fire Conclave group for LA fire artists who want to
perform in the Circle on Burn Night this year, and this is an open invitation to
anyone who would like to join. The Phoenix Projekt, www.phoenixprojekt.org
LA's brand-spank-me-new Conclave, was formed to give artists an
opportunity to practice, to play, and ultimately to perform with over six hundred
(!) fellow fire performers around the Man just before his immolation.

Sammy Bliss, who was been hosting Monday Night Playtime
mondaynightplaytime@yahoogroups.com at the Middle Space Theatre on
Cahuenga Avenue in Hollywood, has been gracious enough to also open his
doors on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. for the Phoenix Projekt, which is
meeting weekly every Tuesday. For directions, please email the Monday
Night Playtime group. Practice for this year's choreographed piece will begin
at 8:30, and everyone is welcome to stay and play afterward. If you have a
piece you would like to do for the renegade portion of the Burn, this is a good
time and place to rehearse it as well.

If you are interested in drumming for the
performance, you can contact Reid De Fever at www.drumconsortium.com for practice
times and locations.

The poi choreography can also be found at www.drumconsortium.com.
Please take the opportunity sometime this week to check it out - it spans about
2 and a half minutes and is composed of fairly basic moves. The lovely Sass
demonstrates the sequence from two different angles, and she has agreed to
be on hand as well next Tuesday for coaching.

More information will be posted on the Phoenix Projekt website as it comes. I
look forward to seeing you there.
