On my morning walk today I saw a flyer that said Samoan Fire Sword Competition. It will be Sept. 30, Oct. 1 and 2nd at Pearson Park in Anaheim CA. It said 'workshops will be offered' so I may show up just to see what's happening.

Mon, March 21, 2005 - 8:12 PMA samoan fire sword is much more like a bladed short staff than the western conception of a sword.
The rules for such competitions normally include very precise requirements as to what moves be in your routine, and usually require a performance of the traditional Haka war dance which involves chanting in a polynesian language. There are also usually requirements as to native costuming and such.
Most people who compete have attended schools teaching these things. . .
