    I too an biased...
But I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else, the sword is a deeply personal thing, pick the one that calls you. And if ONE doesn't call you, I've never seen a maker turn down a multi-sword order... :P

As a self-appointed representative of the DIY crowd, I would remind you that such things can be made yourself. However, I too must admit personal bias ;)

And, as I'm sure you know, with something like a sword your own personal preferences as to balance and length are of paramount importance. It would not be so hard to take your *second favorite* real sword, grind the edge off [or leave it sharp daredevil], drill some holes, and bolt kevlar wick to the blade leaving 8" -12" unwicked at the base of the blade. Just don't use a really nice sword, especially a differentially tempered or damascus blade, 'cause lighting it on fire will ruin the temper.

I agree with Fireninja's take. Balance is critical. Wielding an unbalanced sword is both tiring and (more) dangerous. I'd like to add that there's a certain legitimacy to making your own swords, or at least having a hand in their construction.

I second... no, I third that.

What I would add is that there is a crucial distinction to be made between swords you're going to use in contact performance versus swords you'll be using in solo forms only.

As a Kali/Eskrima stylist, I have found that most fireswords are way too heavy and point-heavy for my taste, since I favor short fast weapons. If I'm going to be spinning alone, I don't need the sword to be contact-worthy, and something fast and light is all I want, and that's not too hard to make on your own. However, if you want to be able to clash with someone, then the technical difficulty of making something that will do the job goes way up.
