For those of you in the US, here's two links to some good information about the state-by-state legalities of carrying / using weapons. In nevada, it looks like carrying machetes with and intent to harm is illegal. However, I don't see anything else illegal for swords, especially not for swords used in performance

Re: the legalities of carrying a sword around...
Sun, June 4, 2006 - 8:46 PMFor the most part, if it's an edged weapon over about 4" it's probably illegal. If you have a fire sword that's not just a modified regular sword, they never look twice.

Sun, June 4, 2006 - 10:59 PMLook, it's all about semantics and professionalism. These are not weapons. They are "theatrical props" and "tools."
I've been a fight choreographer/performer for 13 years and never had a problem with any of my equipment from local cops or airlines. -

Re: the legalities of carrying a sword around...
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 4:16 PMI have never had a problem with a "prop" sword either. even know they are real swords converted into fire tools..I think the laws with blade size falls into concealment of the blade and a knife being automatic like a switch blade..I know switch blades are legal in alot of states if they are under a certain size..
I know here in Fl i can walk around with a shotgun over my shoulder as long as it is in plain veiw i dont see why a sword would be any different ... -

Re: the legalities of carrying a sword around...
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 6:19 PMThe CCW laws are different in each state. In MI, it's any 'concealable' weapon, which includes knives over 4", any double edged knife, all guns, swords, shiruken, and chucks. Spring batons are legal until you attach a point or blade to the end then they qualify as switchblades.
Here in CA, I've had cops blow off my swords, look slanty at fire chucks, and ignore everything else. -
